We Are All in This Together – Peggy Oki
June 10, 2020 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am
Peggy Oki, our graduation speaker of 2020 will lead us on a conversation about the wake-up call that the Covid-19 pandemic is giving to the planet. The human race is at a crossroads of choosing to unite as a world community for the well-being of all life on this planet.
Since high school, Peggy Oki has been challenging the norm. Originally from Venice Beach, California, she was the only Z-Girl amongst the famous Z-Boys that revolutionized skateboarding in the 1970s. At the University of Santa Barbara, Peggy studied environmental biology and art and over the past 40 years has made a career out of activism, conservation, and art.
For over 25 years (mostly at her personal expense) She has been an activist for whales and dolphins. For over a decade she has empowered children of all ages (including adults) while raising awareness about the plight of Whales and Dolphins through visually powerful public Environmental Art projects and exhibits all over the world.
Since 2004, the Origami Whales Project (OWP) has worked to raise awareness concerning threats to cetaceans (dolphins and whales) through its stunning and memorable “Curtain of 38,000 Origami Whales.”* Created by thousands of concerned citizens across the globe and exhibited throughout the world, this large-scale public art project serves as a powerful visual statement and memorial for the thousands of individual whales killed since the 1986 ban on commercial whaling. Her origami installations are an international sensation.
In 2012, she was inducted into the Skateboard Hall of Fame and continues to be an icon for skateboard and surf culture. Recently, she was featured in Emil and Caroline music video, watch her video here.
Pak Sal also had the opportunity to sit down and interview Peggy, so please watch the video below to learn more about this incredible activist.
