Special Guests
Peggy Oki
Peggy studied environmental biology and art and over the past 40 years has made a career out of activism, conservation, and art at the University of Santa Barbara. For over 25 years (mostly at her personal expense) She has been an activist for whales and dolphins. For over a decade she has empowered children of all ages (including adults) while raising awareness about the plight of Whales and Dolphins through visually powerful public Environmental Art projects and exhibits all over the world. Since 2004, the Origami Whales Project (OWP) has worked to raise awareness concerning threats to cetaceans (dolphins and whales) through its stunning and memorable “Curtain of 38,000 Origami Whales.”* Created by thousands of concerned citizens across the globe and exhibited throughout the world, this large-scale public art project serves as a powerful visual statement and memorial for the thousands of individual whales killed since the 1986 ban on commercial whaling. Her origami installations are an international sensation.
Ric O’Barry
is an American animal rights activist and former animal trainer who was first recognized in the 1960s for capturing and training the five dolphins that were used in the TV series Flipper. O’Barry transitioned from training dolphins to instead advocating against industries that keep dolphins in captivity after one of the Flipper dolphins died in his arms. In 1996, a dolphin was seized from the Sugarloaf Dolphin Sanctuary, a corporation O’Barry worked for, for violating the Animal Welfare Act of 1966. In 1999, O’Barry was fined for violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act as the result of illegally releasing two dolphins that were not able to survive in the wild. The dolphins sustained life-threatening injuries. In 1970, O’Barry founded the Dolphin Project, a group that aims to educate the public about captivity and, where feasible, free captive dolphins. He was featured in the Academy Award-winning film The Cove (2009), which used covert techniques to expose the yearly dolphin drive hunting that goes on in Taiji, Japan.
Alexandra Cousteau
Alexandra’s advocacy for the oceans started at the age of 8 when she gathered signatures for her grandfather’s petition to save Antarctica. Since then, she has always been involved in ocean conservation in some way, whether advocating for the expansion of marine protected areas, educating consumers about sustainable seafood, conducting deep-sea surveys, rescuing dolphins and manatees, or investigating the impacts of oil spills and agricultural runoff on sensitive coastal zones. Over the past few years, she’s realized that conservation, the idea that we must protect what we have, is insufficient. Over 50% of blue natural capital in the oceans has been lost. If we want to leave a legacy for our children, we must do more than conserve. We must be strategic and relentless in our quest to restore ocean abundance.
Paula Murphy
Paula Murphy is the mother of two Green School students. She has a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, a masters degree in business administration and finance from the University of Southern California. Paula is passionate about inspiring people to raise their personal vibration in order to cultivate healing and promote the highest level of physical and emotional health and wellbeing in the body.
Eamon O’Grady
Water boy and dolphin advocate, Eamon O’Grady shares his quest to embark on a second, epic, long-distance, lake-crossing swim in support of freeing dolphins from captivity. One ordinary boy, one giant challenge, one urgent call to action.
Finn Murphy
Finn Murphy is a talented sportsman, an avid surfer and a keen conservationist. His passion and quiet dedication lead to the experience of a lifetime that was hard work but also rewarding beyond the wildest dreams of what school field trips can be.
