Practice & Challenges in Integrating Math during Distance Learning
June 19, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
As one of the core subjects to be taught at school, could math be taught effectively outside of a normal classroom setting? How do teachers retain the math culture when they have no choice other than to adopt technology into learning?
In this session, we will be joined by our Green Educators, Jonathon Levin and Synta Canydia, to talk about how we integrate math in a sustainable way at Green School Bali, especially in Middle and High School, and discuss what are the challenges that our teachers have been facing to ensure a successful design and implementation of online mathematics learning. We will also share some different teaching styles and approaches, practical tips, useful tools and resources. This will be a discussion session and everyone is welcome! Synta has been teaching Mathematics in Middle School for more than 5 years. This is her third year at Green School and previously, she has experience teaching mathematics at a bilingual school in Jakarta. She holds a master’s degree in Mathematics Education from Ewha Womans University, Seoul, South Korea. Synta finds some challenges during this distance learning environment include keeping students’ engagement rates in online class discussions and supporting each students’ needs to help them progress in their mathematics learning. She believes that having a continuous discussion on strategies implemented in mathematics class during distance learning is essential.
Jonathon teaches Middle School Mathematics and Technology. He takes a visual and exploratory approach to teaching math and aimes to incorporate discussions and student investigation into his lessons. This is his first year teaching with Green School after 10 years of experience in Madrid (Spain) and in Los Angeles (California). Transitioning to the distance learning environment challenged him to leverage technology in order to give students meaningful ways to explore and engage with math concepts. There were some successes and some “areas for growth”. Outside of the classroom, he is into hiking, yoga, guitar, frisbee, cooking, snowboarding and (now) social distancing.
