Green Stone Sharing Session 2023-24

As our graduates enter their final year we come together as a community to support the preparation for their Green Stone presentations in June.

The Bridge is hosting multiple meetings, and in each of them, 5 students will share their path, and their challenges, and we will have the opportunity to offer them guidance, suggestions, and most of all love and strength in such an important period of their lives.

A requirement for every Green School graduate is a capstone project, known as Green Stone. Green Stone is a year-long inquiry and process where students demonstrate a mastery of core skills and Green School skills. This can be a passion project, an area of interest, or a solution to a real-world problem. The Green Stone experience culminates in a 13-minute TED-style talk the week before graduation. It is a life-changing experience and prepares every student for their next adventure and arguably for the rest of their life. Green Stone is a process and an experience that not only develops skills but also provides a platform to demonstrate mastery of those skills.

John – Bali Street Mum’s Ubud
Working with Bali Street Mums to establish and create a new location for Bali Street Mums in Ubud. Helping kids learn, establishing a curriculum, and offering help to the mothers.

Where do I need help?  Providing an education to the children who are not privileged enough to.

Felipe – From Struggle To Strength
During a recent family trip to Nepal, we had the opportunity to assist an orphanage that is facing big challenges. These range from possibly losing their home to struggling to afford a proper education and more. Over a big lunch where we invited all the children to a restaurant which they had never really experienced, I had a heart-to-heart with the children, discussing their aspirations for the future. Despite having ambitious dreams, their current life circumstances seemed to be holding them back. I could tell that they were allowing their situation to determine their future. Interestingly, these children have been creating numerous paintings, which my mother has been purchasing over time. This got me thinking about how I could empower them to help themselves. I will collaborate with them to set up workshops and create big paintings that can be sold in my mother’s gallery and other locations globally. The funds generated from these sales will be directed toward improving their education and addressing other needs. This way I can help shape their mind in order for them to believe they always have a way to improve their life and get what they want. My ultimate aim extends beyond just this one orphanage. I hope to be able to inspire and incorporate this into orphanages everywhere in order to create a ripple. The message I want to convey is that they can shape their own destinies despite their current situations, and not let their situation determine anything.

Where do I need help? I’m going to need help from my parents, in order to finance all the flights the materials and anything else. As well as my mums helped to present my project to all the galleries she works with in order for them to get on board and help sell their paintings and tell their stories. If I’m successful I would love to expand this and maybe work with someone that knows lots of orphanages and has experience in these fields

Eamon – Unplug to Reconnect: Dopamine Detox
I am going to challenge myself to cut out all sources of – what I refer to as – unearned dopamine. Unearned dopamine sources would be things like video games, television shows or movies, social media, YouTube, and many more. Sources of earned dopamine would be things more akin to completing a workout; improving your hobbies; refining old, and acquiring new skills. This challenge will last somewhere between 3-5 months (TBD), and I will use autoethnography to measure my results. I will do detailed journaling and video journaling daily, using prompts to describe my emotional state and any changes (or lack thereof) as a whole. My findings from the challenge will be presented alongside my research on the science of dopamine. I hope to be able to inspire people to change their own lives. I want to question the idea of sustainability as a whole; can you really make an impact on the world if you haven’t established

Where do I need help?  No particular areas at the moment.

OM – Habitat
My project is designing a software/computer interface that can provide insight and data so people can make more sustainable decisions. The software will be implemented in built spaces (i.e.: the Living Bridge).

Where do I need help? I need help with the completion of the data collection phase of my project, generating ideas for this theme of sharing data with people for sustainable behavioral change, evaluating the ideas- pros and cons- and deciding direction/specifics. I also need professional guidance/help with data collection and software design.
