April 25, 2024 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am

Embarking on a Journey of Biosphere Stewardship: A Talk by the Founders of Biosphere Foundation
Join us on a captivating journey as we delve into the extraordinary world of biospheres with Abigail Alling, Founder & CEO, and Mark “Laser” Van Thillo, COO & Captain of the sailing vessel Mir. In 1991, their pioneering spirit led a team of eight scientists on a groundbreaking mission – a space colony experiment known as Biosphere 2. Within the confines of this colossal structure, they recreated diverse ecosystems, including a desert, tropical rainforest, mangroves, savannah, and a coral-reefed ocean, all under one roof.
For two years, cocooned in this human terrarium, the team unraveled the secrets of survival and sustainability, leaving behind a profound discovery crucial for the challenges humanity faces today.
Now, three decades later, the Biosphere Foundation introduces a new chapter in biosphere exploration – The Biosphere Stewardship Center, perched overlooking the coral oceans of Menjangan Bali. Abigail Alling, affectionately known as ‘Gaie,’ has been at the forefront of marine conservation and environmental projects for the past 30 years, armed with a Masters of Science degree from Yale University. She served as the former Director of Marine Ecological Systems and Assistant Director of Research and Development for the ‘Biosphere 2’ project.
Alongside her, Mark “Laser” Van Thillo, the COO and Captain of the sailing vessel Mir, has spent the last two decades managing the logistical and technical aspects of Biosphere Foundation’s projects. Currently spearheading the construction of the Biosphere Stewardship Center, Laser was the former co-Captain and Manager of Technical Systems for the groundbreaking ‘Biosphere 2’ project.
Don’t miss the chance to engage with the minds that paved the way for a sustainable coexistence between humanity and our precious planet. 🌿🌍✨
