Arief Rabik is the President Director of Indonesia’s Environmental Bamboo Foundation and the founder of the 1000 Bamboo Villages project, which aims to create economic viability for the use of bamboo agroforestry to sequester CO2 and restore degraded tropical forest lands in dozens of countries. Arief is an expert in Bamboo cultivation, value-added processing, and brokering public and private support and investment in village-level bamboo production. Arief is a 2nd generation bamboo specialist who is capable and comfortable getting his hands dirty helping local producers on the ground as he is working with corporate leaders in the board room and politicians in national capitals to bargain for scalable policy and financial support to turn his vision into reality.
Bambu Village – The 1000 Bamboo Village Initiative is a breakthrough strategy to tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues – climate change and land degradation – while creating economic opportunities for rural communities and promoting gender & social inclusion. One thousand villages restore the degraded lands by planting bamboo while reintroducing native species and growing food crops and cash crops within the larger agroforestry. By building a village-based factory and cutting the middlemen, the integrated forest-to-factory production system allows farmer cooperatives to produce value-added bamboo products at the village level and sell at a fair price, enabling to tackle four of the pressing issues of the world: climate change, degraded lands, rural poverty, and gender inequality.
