Well-being and Navigating the Health System in Bali – hosted by the GSPA

The GSPA would like to invite parents to join us for a virtual panel discussion. We will cover all aspects of the Medical world here in Bali, led by former GS parent Dr Alan Fleischman, Tjok Gde Kerthyasa (Homeopathy), and Jyoti Schonfelder-Fehres (a Chiropractor). There will be a brief permission ceremony in the beginning of the discussion by Kara Fleischman, which shows our respect as guests on this beautiful island.

Dr. Alan Fleischmann has been a Green School dad since 2016 and has taken a year off during the pandemic. He is a family physician who went to Medical School in Ireland, did his postgraduate training in London where he then went into practice for 7 years before being invited to America. He worked at the Mayo Clinic for 18 years and was in leadership there. His areas of expertise are Family Medicine and what he refers to as “Relational Medicine” which he taught at Mayo and refers to doctor-patient communication, service and enhancing the patient experience, professionalism and ethics. For the last three years of his career before retiring to Bali, he was invited to Abu Dhabi to help redesign their primary health care system and improve its quality. Over the past 5 years he has been a source of wisdom for many Green School families as they navigate the medical system in Bali which is the topic for his discussion.

Kara Fleischmann is the wife to Dr. Alan Fleischmann and they are parents to their daughter Ayla. Their family came to Bali 5 years ago so Ayla could attend Green School. They have both been very active in Green School and the GS community. Since COVID, they have been home-schooling and adapting to a new way of living, which has been very rewarding for their family.
Kara has a deep respect for the posture of humility within the Balinese culture, and how very different it is from the posture of independent westerners. While both qualities have value, she has seen how we westerners can really benefit from adopting a more humble posture when living as guests in Bali. One way to do this is through the practice of doing permission ceremonies, which show our respect as guests on this beautiful island. This will be the topic of her conversation with the Green School Community.
