Earth Company

Based in Japan and Indonesia, Earth Company is an impact-driven social enterprise that offers transformational support to change-makers, delivers inspiring educational programs, provides professional consulting services, and manages a next-generation eco-hotel in Ubud, Bali called Mana Earthly Paradise.  

Bumi Sehat

Founded in 1995, Bumi Sehat provides access to quality healthcare and to kind, hygienic, culturally appropriate childbirth to all mothers, fathers, children and families that seek care from their clinics. Bumi Sehat clinics in Bali, Aceh, Papua, and the Philippines offer a comprehensive range of allopathic and holistic medicine, as well as pre and post-natal care, breastfeeding support, family health services, nutritional education, pre-natal yoga and gentle, loving natural birth services, in addition to education and environmental programs.  

Robin Lim

Robin Lim is a Filipino–American midwife, mother, grandmother, and founder of Yayasan Bumi Sehat, a nonprofit organization that provides free maternity care for pregnant women, mothers and their babies, plus healthcare for all those in need.

Born in the Philippines in 1956, Robin decided to become a midwife in 1991, when her sister and niece tragically died during childbirth. She qualified as a midwife in the United States and Indonesia, and founded the Bumi Sehat Foundation International in Bali, Indonesia. To date, she has birthed over 9,000 babies and is known by locals and international fans alike as “Ibu Robin” (Mother Robin). Bumi Sehat (which translates to “healthy mother earth”) operates clinics in Bali, Aceh, Papua, and the Philippines, as well as temporary clinics in disaster areas around the world such as Haiti and Nepal. Through the foundation, Robin trains and inspires more than 6,000 midwives and nurses per year, and over 300,000 people have benefitted from Bumi Sehat’s services to date.

She was awarded the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year award for helping thousands of low-income women in Indonesia with healthy pregnancy and birth services.

Aska Hamakawa

Aska serves as the Executive Director of Earth Company and Co-owner of Mana Earthly Paradise. 

Since leaving PricewaterhouseCoopers as a management consultant, Aska’s career and studies have revolved around the areas of climate change and disaster relief in the Asia Pacific. She managed disaster relief efforts after the 2009 Samoa Earthquake and 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Aska served as the Vice President of a climate change NGO, Tuvalu Overview, while working with MIT’s Center for Collective Intelligence to run its crowdsourcing initiative, Climate CoLab, to help solve climate change. 

Aska has two BAs from Boston University, a master degree from the University of Hawaii with a focus on climate change in the Pacific Islands, a certificate in Marketing Strategy from the Cornell University, and is a certified fundraiser. In 2014 Aska was awarded the Dalai Lama’s Unsung Heroes of Compassion Award.

Tomo Hamakawa

Tomo serves as the Managing Director of Earth Company, Co-owner of Mana Earthly Paradise, and Chief Strategy Officer at Kopernik. 

He is a seasoned development professional having lived and worked in various corners of the world from the Tibetan plateau, Indian drylands, Indonesias tropics, to Japanese metropolises. He has extensive field experience working for international and local agencies across Asia and Africa, including the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, Save the Children, and UNICEF. He was formerly an Assistant Professor at the Global Leadership Program at the University of Tokyo. 

Tomo has a BA in Social Anthropology from Harvard College, a Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, and was a fellow in the Asia Pacific Leadership Program at the East-West Center. In 2014 Tomo was awarded the Dalai Lama’s Unsung Heroes of Compassion Award. He is a member of the NEXUS Asia leadership team.
