SKILL UP – NevHouse – Turning Plastic Waste into Shelter – Nev Hyman
May 24 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
For decades, Australian surfboard shaper Nev Hyman shaped boards for world champions, but now he is shaping something quite different: affordable, cyclone-proof housing.
After launching three surfboard brands — the first in 1973 — Mr Hyman initially invested in plastics recycling. Then, four years ago, Mr Hyman teamed up with leading Sydney architect Ken McBryde to experiment using recycled plastic waste and wood-plastic composite to make cheap homes for Pacific nations that could be quickly set up by non-expert local labor.
Following Cyclone Pam in March 2015, they redesigned the house to withstand 300 kilometer an hour winds and shifted their attention to Vanuatu.NevHouse takes the waste we throw away and turns it into rapidly deployable shelter. Cyclone-proof Nevhouse homes, school classrooms, medical clinics, and other structures are made from recycled materials. These places of sanctuary can be built in just five days and are functional either on or off the power grid. Winner of multiple Good Design Awards including Architecture and Sustainability
Having surfed in Bali during the late 70s and early 80s and then returning to see more and more rubbish in the oceans …Nev is back to invest in a plastics recycling company. The Bridge talk will highlight a workable sustainable housing solution while connecting, inspiring, and empowering the Green School community, as well as Indonesians from all walks of life
Nev is an internationally recognized member of the surfing community, having established two of the best known and most successful surfboard brands in the world: Nev Future Shapes and recently Firewire Surfboards. He turned his attention to the housing industry in 2009 with a vision to use recyclable materials to build low cost rapidly deployable homes. When Nev is not surfing, you’ll find him talking to government ministers, community leaders, and pension funds. He has a heart for the people, a global solution and the resolve to make a difference in this world.
