Between the forest and the sea – FAMILY FIELD TRIP
September 24, 2021 @ 3:30 pm - September 26, 2021 @ 5:00 pm
The Biosphere Foundation is very excited to welcome Green School families to spend a weekend with them partaking in activities involving the environmental restoration programs of the Sea and Land themes.
The Foundation takes very seriously its mission to educate and empower individuals towards caring for a healthy biosphere where the reforestation of our forests will have direct consequences of our coral reefs; the earth’s indicators on the health of our Biosphere 1 that is Earth.
During the 2 days, you will discover the inevitable connection between unsustainable farming practices on land that can have detrimental effects on the ecosystems at sea. You will also learn about the largest enclosed ecological laboratory experiment ever built – the Biosphere 2 Project.
LOCATION – BETWEEN THE FOREST AND THE SEA
Biosphere Stewardship Center – a destination for anyone interested in learning about how to care for our biosphere
The new Biosphere Center is the hub for land-based work in the local community and is based in the village of Pejarakan in North West Bali, Indonesia. The land is adjacent to Bali Barat National Park, the only National Park in Bali. We are immersed in nature and are a 4-hour drive away from Denpasar airport. At sea, the ship “Mir” acts as the platform for ocean research and for reaching out to coastal communities in Indonesia.
The BSC has been designed to be a demonstration center that features modern yet simple and efficient sustainable practices such as rainwater catchment, wastewater recycling, solar power and more!
PROGRAM
This will be an amazing opportunity for you to snorkel around Menjangan Island, one of the most beautiful spots for snorkeling in Bali, and learn about how Biosphere Foundation is restoring and helping to restore this fragile ecosystem.
You will be able to visit the vessel Mir, a 1910 classic 113’ sailing ship, that voyage the seas and work off remote islands in Asia, and meet Dolphin, MIR’s Captain, who will welcome you onboard and share with you her stories of the past, present, and future expeditions.
On the land, we will hiking up Bukit Indah hill and learn about their reforestation project involving the replanting of trees, the importance of swales and creation of ponds to restore soil health and support water catchment in this dry ecosystem.
ABOUT THE BIOSPHERE FOUNDATION
In 1991, 8 scientists embarked on a space colony journey to establish how mankind could survive on Mars. It was called Biosphere 2.
An astronomical feat of humans resilience, united with desert, tropical rainforest, mangroves, savannah and a coral reefed ocean, all under one roof. Cocooned in this human terrarium for 2 years, the team of 8 made discovery’s never more needed by humanity than today.
The Biosphere Foundation had launched the new form of Biosphere, overlooking the coral oceans of Menjangan Bali, The Biosphere Stewardship Center.
“Few will have the greatness to bend history,
But each of us can work to change a small portion of events
And in the total of all those acts
Will be written the history of a generation
So yes, the world is coming to an end
And the path towards a new beginning starts within you” – Robert Kennedy
