We all travelled across the planet in search of something — a new home, an environment for our children to thrive, a well-earned rest, or something deeper and more enriching for the soul. Travel has always offered an opportunity for transformation, but it’s not a given. Change doesn’t lie in the destination — otherwise everyone who arrived at Santiago de Compostela or Nachi Falls would be transformed. It’s not even in the journey, for everyone who walks an ancient trail may experience trials but isn’t necessarily a changed person upon return. So what is the secret, the active ingredient, and how can we make the most of our pilgrimage here in Bali, and beyond?
Dr. Miles Neale is a psychotherapist and teacher of Tibetan Buddhism for the past thirty years, and author of Return with Elixir and Gradual Awakening. He has taught at Harvard, Columbia, and Cornell, and left his home in Manhattan, NY to relocate to Bali, replacing the therapy office with ancient pilgrimage routes across the world, from the Himalayas to Japan, Spain to Bhutan. He will share valuable lessons about transforming adversity to advantage and discovering ordinary miracles, both part of what he calls the pilgrim’s mindset — a reorientation to travel and life that changes us from the inside out.
