Bamboo has become an important alternative to conventional construction materials. It can provide you with sustainable source of timber for generations, and its strength as a material will surprise you!
Our 3 Day Introduction to Bamboo workshop will give you an in-depth understanding of bamboo as a building material for construction and carpentry. You will learn about bamboo as a sustainable resource, visit Bamboo Pure’s bamboo factory, and get hands-on experience working with this unique material. You will learn how to carve a bamboo joint with guidance from master bamboo carpenters, and the foundations of how to design a bamboo structure by making scaled models to visualize and test your design ideas. No previous background in design or construction is necessary to join.

Detailed Schedule
DAY 1: Understanding Bamboo
9:00 AM – 3:30 PM (Arrive 15 min before for registration)
- Learn about bamboo’s potential and limitations as a building material for construction.
- Tour the Bambu Pure Factory & discover how bamboo is treated and processed before use
- Build with bamboo by participating in our structural systems workshop
DAY 2: Bamboo Architectural Model Making
9:00 AM – 3:30 PM
- Bamboo architectural model making workshop
- Architectural tour of the structures on the Bamboo U campus

DAY 3: Bamboo Basic Carpentry
Introduction to the tools for traditional bamboo carpentry 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM
- Reinforced Fish Mouth joint carving
- Bend bamboo using the ‘rup-rup’ technique
- Split & flatten bamboo for making walls, furniture & interiors
Who is this course for?
This beginner bamboo course is for anyone interested in learning more about bamboo as a building material for structure construction. It is particularly valuable for people working in the fields of design, construction, and architecture but anyone with a desire to learn about bamboo construction and carpentry is welcome. All participants must feel comfortable engaging in hands-on physical activities. It is open to anyone aged 18+, If you are under 18 a waiver signed by your parents is required.
