4XampL’s eXistential Trip Out Film, Triva Quiz & Chat Night
April 6, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
An event every week that begins at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, repeating until April 27, 2021
10th Grader Sevan Fidel’s Dad and former GS high school teacher, Zach Reznichek has recently initiated a few film nights at Paradiso in Ubud. One “for kidz by kidz” and the other for adults and young adults.
As a teacher ‘Pak Zach’ uses the medium of film to open up big questions about life, philosophy, morality and difficult decisions which he explores with his students in English, philosophy, and mindfulness classes. Three years ago, when his and Sophie Daubisse’s other son, Milan, was in 10th grade, ‘Pak Zach’ led a youth group in Canggu sponsored by Deus ex Machina called “FFF” that screened movies weekly, such as Captain Fantastic, Brain Candy, Breakfast Club and Over the Edge.
He is back at it with a new film night – this time in Ubud – launching 6pm on Tuesday, April 6th, with global phenomenon and sequel to the Aussie dystopian smash hit of 1979, Mad Max 2: Road Warrrior.
What was the impetus for the new film night?
“To welcome our kids (Milan and Sevan) into adulthood, Sophie and I have been using a medium we all can agree on – film – to bring more awareness to life and joy as kids AND then as they got older the existential struggle that life presents and continues to present as we make our way through the cycles of relationships and “hero’s/heroine’s journey” as teenagers and adults. We call this getting together to watch films that are more than just entertaining ‘Ciné-club’.”
Once again, they have moved it out of their home and onto the big screen – this time at Paradiso in Ubud, Zach says, in an effort to “help keep the theatre open and locals in their jobs and to bring our young adults to see curated discussion-worthy pieces of art – out in the community where they can take part in trivia quizzes, chats and enjoy films whose characters have made an existential impact across the globe and become part of our modern cultural tapestry.”
What’s with 4XampL? “I used to be a music producer and club DJ in Montreal using that name, it just feels nice to be a ‘selecta’ again! Rather than call the night Cult Classics or something such, we decided to brand it and give it a vibe with an experience – something people can feel a part of. Before the film, I will ask 5 questions about the movie and then 5 harder more obscure trivia questions. After the screening there will be an informal discussion for those who want to stick around and chat about how they feel about the film. I am also curating some short films by young adults and adults in the community to be played before the main feature. If anyone wants to send me a link of their ‘eXistential eXperience’ send me a YouTube link on FB messenger or email.”
April kicks off with these screen gems each Tuesday:
- Mad Max 2: Road Warrior (April 6)
- The Shawshank Redemption (April 13)
- Thelma & Louise (April 20)
- Malcolm X (April 27)
If one or more of these films resonates with you come out and share a piece of cinematic history w your teenager. Or send them with a friend and talk with them about it later. If you live outside of Ubud, get a carpool going after school Tuesdays up into Ubud for dinner and movie.
